How do clinicians measure recovery after a brain injury?

Recovery isn't measured by how someone feels alone. We combine several objective tools to build a full picture of brain function, since symptoms can improve while underlying deficits remain, or vice versa.

Common measures include:

  • Oculomotor and vestibular testing to assess eye movement, balance, and coordination
  • Neuropsychological evaluations that measure memory, attention, and processing speed
  • ImPACT and similar cognitive testing platforms to track baseline versus current performance
  • DTI imaging in select cases, to look at structural changes in the brain
  • Symptom inventories, used alongside objective data rather than as the sole measure

This layered approach is especially important for our PI and WC patients, where documentation needs to hold up to scrutiny, not just describe how someone feels on a given day.
