Why does recovery sometimes plateau after a concussion?
A plateau doesn't mean healing has stopped. It often means the current treatment approach has addressed what it can, and a different angle is needed to keep progress moving. This can happen for a few reasons:
- The underlying issue shifts, such as from initial inflammation to a vestibular or oculomotor deficit
- Compensatory strategies mask deeper deficits that need to be addressed directly
- Non-physical factors like sleep, stress, or mood begin playing a larger role
Plateaus are a normal part of many recovery paths. They usually call for updated testing to identify what's actually driving the current symptoms, rather than continuing the same plan indefinitely.
