Ataxic Gait
An ataxic gait is an unsteady walking pattern that can look wide-based, wobbly, or “off-balance.”

Why It Matters: It can raise fall risk and make stairs, uneven ground, or quick turns harder.
What It Can Look Like:
- Wider stance when walking
- Swaying side to side
- Trouble with turns or tandem (heel-to-toe) walking
How Clinicians Check It: - Observed walking + heel-to-toe walking test
- Balance tasks (standing with feet together)
- Common Misunderstandings: Not always dizziness—coordination can be the core issue
Related Terms: balance tasks, cerebellum, vestibular, eye movements, proprioceptive feedback
