Neurologist
A neurologist is a medical doctor who evaluates and treats conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, and nerves—like headaches, seizures, stroke, and neurologic symptoms after injury.
Why it matters: After head or neck trauma, a neurologist can help evaluate symptoms, decide what testing is appropriate, and guide treatment—especially when symptoms persist or are complex.
Evaluating headaches/dizziness/numbness; assessing cognitive complaints and neurologic changes; ordering tests when indicated; coordinating care with rehab, psychology, or neuropsychology.
How clinicians check it: Neurologic exam (strength/reflexes/sensation/coordination/gait); symptom timeline + triggers; may order tests (MRI/EEG) based on the clinical picture.
Common misunderstandings: Neurologists don’t only treat “catastrophic” conditions; normal imaging may not explain function; neurology + neuropsychology often complement each other.

Related terms (internal links): TBI; MRI; EEG; Neuropsychology; Executive function; Visual-ocular exam; Psychiatrist.
