Forensic Biomechanics
What Is Forensic Biomechanics?
Forensic biomechanics is the application of biomechanics to injury investigation and legal matters. It examines how forces interact with the human body and helps determine whether a specific event could plausibly cause the injuries being reported.
Forensic biomechanical analysis may evaluate:
- Motor vehicle collisions
- Slip and fall incidents
- Workplace injuries
- Sports injuries
- Product-related injuries
- Pedestrian accidents
- Other trauma-related events
By analyzing factors such as body movement, impact forces, acceleration, positioning, and injury mechanisms, forensic biomechanics can help provide insight into injury causation and injury severity.
In personal injury and neurotrauma cases, forensic biomechanics is often used alongside medical records, diagnostic testing, clinical evaluations, and expert opinions to develop a more complete understanding of how an injury may have occurred.
While forensic biomechanics does not diagnose medical conditions, it can provide valuable scientific context regarding whether the forces involved in an incident are consistent with the injuries being claimed.
