Post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE)

Post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) is a neurological condition in which a person develops recurring, unprovoked seizures after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Unlike seizures that may occur immediately after a head injury, post-traumatic epilepsy refers to seizures that develop more than one week after the injury and may continue months or even years later.

PTE can occur after mild, moderate, or severe traumatic brain injuries, although the risk increases with more serious injuries involving bleeding in the brain, skull fractures, penetrating trauma, or prolonged loss of consciousness. Researchers believe post-traumatic epilepsy develops when injury-related changes in brain tissue alter normal electrical activity, creating an ongoing predisposition for seizures.

Symptoms may include convulsions, staring spells, loss of awareness, unusual sensations, memory disturbances, or sudden episodes of confusion. Because symptoms can appear long after the initial injury, individuals and healthcare providers may not immediately recognize the connection to a prior concussion or traumatic brain injury.

For patients recovering from a traumatic brain injury, identifying and treating post-traumatic epilepsy is important because recurring seizures can affect safety, cognitive function, quality of life, employment, and long-term neurological recovery. Specialized neurological evaluation, advanced diagnostic testing, and ongoing medical management may be necessary to help reduce seizure frequency and improve outcomes.
